set a file upload control to a data column within a formview edit item template

I have a formview with an edit template which contains a textbox which has "ProductImageUrl" data column bound to it. I want to bind this to a fileupload control instead so that an image can be selected. There is no text field for a fileupload control.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi, Andrew

Do you want to get the full path of the image? If so, you can use <input id="file1" type="file" ...> then you can get the full path using fil1.value.

Hope this helps.

Is there a way of just getting the file name and not the full path. Can you give me an example of the code behind for using the fil1.value bit.

Thanks

Andrew

Hello

If you want filename, not the full path, you can useFileUpload control and FileUpload1.FileName is that you want.

As to the code, it's very easy.

<%@. Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="True" %>

<script runat="server">

void Button1_Click(object Source, EventArgs e)
{

if (Text1.Value == "")
{
Span1.InnerHtml = "Error: You must enter a file name." + File1.Value;
return;
}

if (File1.PostedFile.ContentLength > 0)
{
try
{
File1.PostedFile.SaveAs("c:\\temp\\" + Text1.Value);
Span1.InnerHtml = "File uploaded successfully to <b>c:\\temp\\" +
Text1.Value + "</b> on the Web server.";
}
catch (Exception exc)
{
Span1.InnerHtml = "Error saving file <b>c:\\temp\\" +
Text1.Value + "</b><br>" + exc.ToString() + ".";

}
}

}
void Click(Object src, EventArgs s)
{
Span1.InnerHtml = File1.Value;
}
</script>

<html>
<head>
<title>HtmlInputFile Example</title>
</head>
<body>

<h3>HtmlInputFile Example</h3>

<form id="Form1" enctype="multipart/form-data"
runat="server">

Select File to Upload:
<input id="File1"
type="file" onselect="Click"
runat="server">

<p>
Save as file name (no path):
<input id="Text1"
type="text"
runat="server">

</p>
<p>
<span id=Span1
style="font: 8pt verdana;"
runat="server" />

</p>
<p>
<input type=button
id="Button1"
value="Upload"
onserverclick="Button1_Click"
runat="server">

</p>

</form>

</body>
</html>

Just click "browser" and then click "upload", the "span" will show the File1.Value.

You can get the file name with the following code

<input type="File" runat="server" ID="InputFile" />

To get the file name use the below line

InputFile.PostedFile.FileName

to get only the filename in a fullpath use

System.IO.Path.GetFileName(fullpath)

HC

The difficult part is that the textbox3 and fileupload controls are within a loginview and a detailsview so doing the findcontrol bit is twisting my melon considerably at the moment.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Andrew

Set colour of the text in DropDownList?

Hi, how can i set the text colour for each Item in a DropDownList during runtime?Simple CSS. You'd use... for example

<option style="background-color:black;">blah</option>

Of course in your codebehind, since you'll be using ListItems, do this to the listitem.

ListItem.Attributes.Add("style","background-color:black;");

Set css class on list box option

Hi,

I want to programatically set the css class on a single list item. I tried the following code but it does nothing...

<html>
<script language="VB" runat="server"
Sub Page_Load(Src As Object, E As EventArgs)
categories.Items(0).Attributes.Add("class", "option.primary")
End Sub

</script
<style>
.primary {background-color:green;color:red; }
</style
<body>
<form runat="server">
<asp:listbox id="categories" Runat="server" SelectionMode="Multiple" Rows="6" Width="400">
<asp:listItem>Item 1</asp:listItem>
</asp:listbox>
</form>
</body>
</html>

Does anyone know how to achieve this?

WT.use the "cssclass" property of the listbox, then you can set it without doing the attributes.add thing.
<option> elements do not have class attributes, but it *is* strange that it doesn't write it out anyway. If you look at the rendered HTML, it probably reads:

<select name="categories">
<option value="Item 1">Item 1</option
That is because, as said, option elements don't have class attributes. Additionally, you're specifying "option.primary" where really the css class you want to use is "primary". If you want to add the class to the whole categories listbox, you could. And an easier way is to use this syntax:

categories.CssClass = "primary"

Which will work just the same as:

categories.Attributes.Add("class","primary")

Thanks for the replies.

I presume that the listItems not rendering their attributes must be a bug.

Looking at the source for the ListBox control, it doesn't appear to be rendering the attributes of its list items. Thus, I'll override the 'RenderContents' method or something and get the attributes rendered.
I think it is a bug too,

but the class browser indicated that the attributes property of the ListItem is readonly which would explain the attributes not being added to the listitem... maybe it is by design.

set index of drop downbox

Hi,

I would like to set the selected item of drop downbox to the index of an
item that will only be known at run time.

I realise that if I were to know it at design time I could write

ddlResidentialCity.SelectedIndex = 3

however what I wish to do is say

ddlResidentialCity.SelectedIndex = Set to value of item who's text value is
"martin"

what I am unsure about is how to get the index of the item I wish to use as
the selected index

any help would be appreciated.

cheers

ddlResidentalCity.Items.FindByValue("martin").Selected = True
How about this?

ddlResidentialCity.SelectedValue = "martin"

Hi, andrew

This is for you:

ProtectedSub Menu1_MenuItemClick(ByVal senderAsObject,ByVal eAs MenuEventArgs)Handles Menu1.MenuItemClick

MultiView1.ActiveViewIndex = Int32.Parse(e.Item.Value)

Menu1.Items(0).ImageUrl ="~/Images/HomeDisabled.jpg"

Menu1.Items(1).ImageUrl ="~/Images/ProductsDisabled.jpg"

Menu1.Items(2).ImageUrl ="~/Images/SupportDisabled.jpg"

Menu1.Items(3).ImageUrl ="~/Images/HelpDisabled.jpg"

SelectCase e.Item.Value

Case 0

Menu1.Items(0).ImageUrl ="~/Images/HomeEnabled.jpg"

Case 1

Menu1.Items(1).ImageUrl ="~/Images/ProductsEnabled.jpg"

Case 2

Menu1.Items(2).ImageUrl ="~/Images/SupportEnabled.jpg"

Case 3

Menu1.Items(3).ImageUrl ="~/Images/HelpEnabled.jpg"

EndSelect

EndSub

//////////////////////////////////////

Please tell us if there is something else you have. Thanks

Hope this helps.

Can i use a query string ? e.g. mypage.aspx?multiview=1 because the menu I have is in a masterpage and the multiview is in a content page. I have used your examples to create a working model using that method. Thankyou.

Hi, Andrew

Are you looking this method?

protectedvoidXXX_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MultiView1.ActiveViewIndex = Convert.ToInt32(XXX.SelectedValue);
}

Hope this helps.

It doesnt work because it always says either the menu1 or the multiview1 is undeclared because the menu is on the masterpage and the multiview on the content page.

If I have a url of

e.gg

http://www.abtecnet.com/services.aspx?view=1

http://www.abtecnet.com/services.aspx?view=2

etc

Then cant I get the query string with Response.Write(Request.QueryString("view"))

And then somehow use that number to set the active index of the multiview?

Cheers

Andrew

If Ive got

Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim viewstring As String
viewstring = Request.QueryString("view")

servicemultiview.setactiveindex()
End Sub

how do I set the active index to the value of the query string based on above?

Thanks

Andrew

Done it now

Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim viewstring As Int32
viewstring = Request.QueryString("view")
servicemultiview.ActiveViewIndex = viewstring
End Sub

set selected value declaratively to dropdownlist

Hi,
I just wonder if there is a way to set a selected item in dropdown list
which items are retreived from database without touching c# code ?
I mean, i have in gridview, in edit mode one dropdownlist which
selected value should be the same as a label text from normal view mode
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlGrdvFrequency" runat="server"
DataTextField="Frequency"
DataValueField="FrequencyId"
DataSourceID="SqlDataSourceMembershipFrequency" />
</EditItemTemplate>
I was looking for sth like SelectedIndex, but intellisense did not give
me any prompt for it. I use now C# code in databound event for gridview
to set this item selected, but ...is there a way of not using this ?
thanks for any promptsHi,
You can set the selectedvalue property on the dropdownlist as follows
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddl"
DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2"
DataValueField="ProductID"
DataTextField="ProductName" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("ProductID")
%>'></asp:DropDownList>

hi podi,
unfortunately the SelectedIndex cannot be set declaratively, it is a compile
error. i'm just wondering how you could know in advance with a databound
list which one to select?
an alternative would be to sort the datasource so that the one you want to
select is the first record, then it will be selected by default when the
list is databound.
i think the databound event is the correct (and best) place to achieve your
task.
i hope this helps
